Global patterns of functional trait variation along aridity gradients in bats

چکیده

Aim Our understanding of the biological strategies employed by species to cope with challenges posed aridity is still limited. Despite being sensitive water loss, bats successfully inhabit a wide range arid lands. We here investigated how functional traits bat assemblages vary along global gradient identify that favour their persistence in environments. Location Global. Time period Contemporary. Major taxa studied Bats. Methods mapped assemblage-level averages four key describing wing morphology, echolocation and body size, based on grid 100-km resolution pool 915 species, modelled them against values. To support our results, we conducted analyses also at level control for phylogenetic autocorrelation. Results At assemblage level, detected rise values aspect ratio, loading forearm length, decrease frequency increasing aridity. These patterns were consistent trends all traits. Main conclusions findings show trait variation associated suggest greater mobility larger size are advantageous features Greater favours bats’ ability track patchy temporary resources, while reduced surface-to-volume ratio likely reduce stress limiting cutaneous evaporation. highlight importance extending attention from species-specific adaptations broad scale multispecies when investigating withstand conditions.

Patterns and drivers of intraspecific variation in avian life history along elevational gradients: a meta-analysis.

Elevational gradients provide powerful natural systems for testing hypotheses regarding the role of environmental variation in the evolution of life-history strategies. Case studies have revealed shifts towards slower life histories in organisms living at high elevations yet no synthetic analyses exist of elevational variation in life-history traits for major vertebrate clades. We examined (i) ...

Diversity and niche evolution along aridity gradients in north american lizards (phrynosomatidae).

Deserts occupy approximately 12% of the Earth's land surface, and are thought to have species poor but highly specialized biotas. However, few studies have examined the evolutionary origins of desert biotas and of diversity patterns along aridity gradients. Further, it is unclear if species occurring in more extreme conditions on a given niche axis (i.e., precipitation) are more specialized for...

Microsite Differentiation Drives the Abundance of Soil Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria along Aridity Gradients

Soil ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) are responsible for nitrification in terrestrial ecosystems, and play important roles in ecosystem functioning by modulating the rates of N losses to ground water and the atmosphere. Vascular plants have been shown to modulate the abundance of AOA and AOB in drylands, the largest biome on Earth. Like plants, biotic and abiotic features suc...

Disentangling Diversity Patterns in Sandy Beaches along Environmental Gradients

Species richness in sandy beaches is strongly affected by concurrent variations in morphodynamics and salinity. However, as in other ecosystems, different groups of species may exhibit contrasting patterns in response to these environmental variables, which would be obscured if only aggregate richness is considered. Deconstructing biodiversity, i.e. considering richness patterns separately for ...
